Updated Program & Registration Reminder

Dear attendees and guests,

We are delighted to share the updated program for the Ernest Hemingway in Toronto Conference,
taking place this July. This year’s gathering promises an engaging mix of scholarly sessions,
special events, readings, fireside chats, and more.

As we move toward finalizing the program, we ask all participants to register as soon as possible
— and ideally no later than May 30. Once we begin designing and producing the final
program, late edits become costly, and we must stay within budget.
Your timely registration helps us:

• Confirm session lineups
• Manage event logistics
• Keep production costs under control

We hope you enjoy exploring the draft program and feel as energized as we are about what’s

Are you interested in joining an international conference and gaining hands-on experience in a professional environment? Volunteer with us for the 2026 Hemingway in Toronto conference!

Volunteers may sign up for three or more 4-hour shifts between July 20 and July 25. Shifts are available between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. A brief training session will be provided, and volunteers will enjoy light refreshments during their shifts. Please see the attached poster for full details.

To give more people the chance to participate, we have extended the submission deadline
to November 30.

We welcome any scholarly or creative approach to Hemingway: from literary approaches to Hemingway and AI, to the archives, to Canadian American connections, to innovative teaching methods inside or outside the classroom.

The Hemingway Society invites proposals exploring Hemingway’s ties to Toronto and his broader literary legacy. We welcome innovative perspectives on any aspect of Hemingway studies, including literary, cultural, and theoretical approaches. Proposals exploring Hemingway’s early career, Toronto connections, and new angles on his work are especially encouraged:

• The impact of Hemingway’s journalistic training on his literary style.
• Hemingway’s Toronto years in a global and transnational context.
• Reconsidering Hemingway’s mentorship networks (e.g., Morley Callaghan).
• Hemingway and civic responsibility.
• The role of sports, competition, and masculinity in Hemingway’s early work.
• Rethinking Hemingway’s relationship with modernist movements in Canada and beyond.

We invite panel proposals (up to 4 presenters + respondent), roundtables (5-6 participants + moderator), pedagogy sessions, and multimedia/creative arts presentations.

• Each member may present one paper in a traditional panel. In addition to one traditional paper, you may also participate in a creative session or roundtable and/or chair a panel.
• Papers must be original, authored by you, and not generated by AI.
• You may appear in no more than two sessions total.
• If you are unable to attend the conference in person, please email us to withdraw your proposal(s) and invitation.
